Record-breaking performance keeps London moving during the Olympics

Bombardier will provide visitors to InnoTrans with an insider's view on how it supported the transit system of the UK capital during the successful 2012 Summer Olympics. While the competitors broke records at the sporting venues, London's transport system broke records of its own to ensure spectators could travel to and from the events quickly and safely during the festive fortnight. London Underground alone carried over 60 million passengers - more passengers than at any time in its 149-year history.

Behind the scenes, Bombardier's maintenance teams and support functions worked around the clock to ensure that more than 800 Bombardier trains on nine key routes serving London were available to meet the increased demand. The fleets maintained by Bombardier include c2c, the North London and East London lines (London Overground), Greater Anglia (Stansted Express), South Eastern, East Midlands Trains, the Victoria Line and sub-surface lines on London Underground as well as the Croydon Tramlink. Bombardier also services most of the East Midlands Train fleet running services into London from Sheffield and the East Midlands as well as the Voyager trains serving London Euston.

During the Olympics, BOMBARDIER ORBITA real-time data gathering and diagnostic technology actively monitored the fleets to identify any maintenance issues before they affected passenger services, while the train depots provided round-the-clock updates on fleet availability and highlighted where support was required. East Midlands Trains travelled 2,000 additional miles per day during the Olympics, while the c2c fleet doubled its weekend service to 18,000 miles to meet customer demand. London's sub-surface railway carried up to 15 per cent more passengers.

Laurent Troger, President Services, Bombardier Transportation, said: "Our employees in the UK performed extremely well to help London deliver the Games and accommodate record numbers of passengers while the eyes of the world were on the city. The plans put in place by Bombardier's Olympics Project Team ensured that we were fully prepared for this busy period. London's transport network ran so smoothly that members of the International Olympic Committee were reported to have used the Underground because it was the most convenient way to travel."

BACKGROUNDERS

Sustainable Transport: Helping Cities Breathe Worldwide

Rapid urbanisation is affecting people's mobility and the environment in economic centres around the world. Today, half of the world's population lives in urban centres - by 2050, more than two out of every three people are expected to live in cities and towns. In order to sustain global economic growth while ensuring the health and quality of life of citizens, cities the world over are looking for smarter and more environmentally friendly forms of mass transit compared to the historic dependence on individual car transportation. Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation is at the forefront of developing cost-effective technologies that improve total vehicle performance to move more people and goods than ever before efficiently within and between urban centres.

BOMBARDIER FLEXITY 2 tram

Trams and light rail vehicles are the most energy efficient mode of transportation, consuming up to five times less energy per passenger than cars travelling with an average of between one and two people. They are capable of transporting up to 250 passengers at once and operate for a period of 30 years or longer. The latest development in Bombardier's proven FLEXITY family of modern trams and light rail vehicles (LRVs) is the FLEXITY 2 tram, which began operating in Blackpool, UK, in April 2012 and is being delivered to Australia's Gold Coast and Switzerland's Capital of Culture, Basel. The tram can be equipped with energy saving technologies from the BOMBARDIER ECO4 portfolio (see page 3) including the BOMBARDIER MITRAC Energy Saver, which allows energy to be re-used and provides energy savings of up to 30 per cent.

Bombardier's fully customisable trams and LRVs have a recyclability rate of approximately 92 per cent and a recoverability rate of about 98 per cent (recycling + energy recovery). They are designed for sustainable mobility throughout their life cycle. To date, 3,500 trams and light rail vehicles from Bombardier have either been ordered or are already operating in about 100 cities in more than 20 countries around the globe. The FLEXITY 2 tram is on display at InnoTrans 2012.

BOMBARDIER PRIMOVE e-mobility solution

The latest technological innovation from Bombardier is a revolutionary wireless charging system that can be used not only for rail vehicles such as FLEXITYtrams but also for electric buses, cars and trucks. Mass transit networks, fleet operators and car owners can now benefit from quieter, cleaner and more attractive traffic arteries without experiencing the range and recharging constraints usually associated with electric charging. The zero-emission PRIMOVE solution eliminates the need for catenaries, cables and plugs, enabling vehicles to operate without obstructing heritage-protected areas, parks and gardens. The system uses wireless transmission of energy between cables installed under the road or track surface and components mounted unobtrusively under the vehicles. Reliable performance is ensured, even under adverse weather and ground conditions such as snow, rain, ice or sand.

The technology is safe and does not affect electronic devices such as mobile phones or pacemakers. By maximising the concept of fast opportunity charging, the PRIMOVE system reduces total cost of ownership. Batteries are designed to be smaller and lighter, thereby extending battery life and minimising energy consumption. Wayside infrastructure and maintenance are kept to a minimum, while wear and tear and the risk of vandalism are eliminated.

BOMBARDIER INNOVIA turnkey systems

From airport links to principal mass transit arteries, monorail systems are the emerging game-changing solution for urban transportation - with the capacity to move hundreds of thousands of passengers safely, efficiently and reliably to their destinations every day. Monorail systems are cost-effective to introduce and permit rapid installation of infrastructure to transform a city's transportation links. The INNOVIA Monorail 300 system can carry up to 48,000 passengers per hour per direction at speeds of up to 80 km/h. This culmination of Bombardier's experience in developing and implementing advanced driverless monorail systems is currently being delivered for commuter services in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Bridging the gap between light rail vehicles and heavy, high capacity metros, Bombardier's INNOVIA Metro 300 system is designed to reduce costs, environmental impact and infrastructure requirements. The vehicles are made primarily from highly recyclable materials that ensure little-to-no waste at the end of their lifespan. The system uses highly effective regenerative braking to re-use energy released during braking. In addition to the energy savings inherent in a light-weight vehicle, BOMBARDIER EnerGstor wayside energy storage can further reduce energy consumption by capturing and storing potentially wasted energy and recycling it back into the system. Ultimately, high energy-efficiency results in low carbon emissions, a smaller environmental footprint and lower operating costs.

Air travel remains an important part of international transportation infrastructure, so the way people travel to and from airports as well as within them is crucial to the sustainability of this mode of travel. Evolved from more than 40 years of reliable performance in automated people mover (APM) technology, the new INNOVIA APM 300 system is ideal for both urban and airport circulator routes. It offers a cost-effective solution to move large volumes of passengers every day with only a small environmental and visual footprint. Bombardier is the market leader for APM systems, having delivered 32 such systems at many of the world's busiest international airports and city districts, including London, UK, Guangzhou, China, and Dallas, Texas, USA.

BOMBARDIER TRAXX locomotives

Locomotives are the backbone of most freight and many passenger services around the world. In Europe, TRAXX locomotives are the most widely used, with more than 1,550 of them sold in just over a decade. At InnoTrans, Bombardier is highlighting two locomotive models setting new standards in sustainable transport. The innovative TRAXX F140 AC locomotive with the "Last Mile" features a supplementary diesel motor that eliminates the need to change locomotives in shunting areas of a rail network, for example at terminals, ports or construction sites. It bridges the so-called "last mile" that previously required a separate shunting locomotive.

The new TRAXX P160 DE Multi-Engine locomotive offers game-changing multi-engine propulsion. Its highly innovative use of four industrial diesel engines instead of a single large diesel motor provides operators with several key advantages: it markedly reduces fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and life cycle costs. It also already meets the stringent new European Union (EU) Stage IIIB emission standards.

BOMBARDIER OMNEO Electric Multiple Unit

Bombardier's OMNEO train is the world's first articulated double-deck Electric Multiple Unit (EMU). It features alternating single and double-deck cars. The weight per passenger has been significantly reduced compared to previous generations of double-deck EMUs.

The OMNEO train is made of 95 per cent recyclable materials and includes many technologies from the ECO4 portfolio to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The MITRAC Permanent Magnet Motor saves energy directly with increased motor efficiency as well as indirectly with reduced vehicle weight. Further environmental benefits are achieved as a larger proportion of the braking is performed electrically, resulting in reduced energy consumption and noise emission. The ThermoEfficient climatisation system, with variable fresh air rate adapting to the number of passengers, reduces energy consumption and ensures a consistent temperature throughout the passenger compartment. To optimise the aerodynamics of the OMNEO train, Bombardier used the same state-of-the-art AeroEfficient computer modelling used for the BOMBARDIER ZEFIRO 380 very high speed train.

ECO4 portfolio of technologies

Bombardier's proven ECO4 portfolio is currently the only comprehensive, flexible group of green transport solutions in the rail industry. It encompasses the four cornerstones of sustainable transport - energy, efficiency, economy and ecology - and includes 15 innovative products and technologies that enable energy savings of up to 50 per cent (compared to current products).

BOMBARDIER ITINO trains serving commuters in and around the commercial hubs of Frankfurt, Germany, and Gothenburg, Sweden, have operated with the BOMBARDIER C.L.E.A.N. Diesel Power Pack since 2009, meeting the EU Stage IIIB emission standards. Bombardier also developed the BOMBARDIER FLEXX Eco bogie suitable for commuter, long distance and high speed trains. It is currently the only lightweight high-performance bogie in the world with proven performance on mainline passenger services, including Bombardier 200 km/h Voyager and Meridian trains in the UK.

The BOMBARDIER REGINA Grona Taget (Green Train), operating commercially in Sweden since 2009, offers energy-efficient high speed rail solutions such as the MITRAC Permanent Magnet Motor for increased efficiency in propulsion and the FLEXX Tronic bogie technology for faster speed through curves.

ZEFIRO very high speed (VHS) trains

The groundbreaking ZEFIRO family features the world's most economical and eco-friendly VHS trains, setting a new benchmark for sustainable mobility. By incorporating many of Bombardier's energy-saving ECO4 technologies, the ZEFIRO trains deliver the lowest energy consumption per seat of any VHS train in the world today. They allow operators to improve efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, scale capacity levels and achieve universal cross-border mobility. The trains also offer superior aerodynamic performance, speed, reduced noise and increased safety. With up to 1,300 seats per train, they can hold twice as many passengers as the largest plane in the world, the Airbus A380.

BOMBARDIER EBI Gate 200 crossing system

The EBI Gate 200 enhanced user-operated crossing system is intended to alert people to oncoming trains when crossing tracks in rural areas. Sustainably delivering safety, it is the first crossing of its kind capable of harnessing renewable energies in its environment as a power source, via an independent solar/wind power system. This reduces its environmental impact and cost of operation. The solution is a completely self-contained overlay system. For installation into brownfield sites, testing is conducted in the factory prior to installation, minimising the need for on-site activities. Commissioning can be completed within five days with no disruption to services.

BOMBARDIER INTERFLO 550 ERTMS Regional solution

Bombardier is the first supplier to have delivered a European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Regional signalling solution, in line with the Union Internationale des Chemins de Fer (UIC) drive to advance the use of ERTMS/ European Train Control System (ETCS) technology. Its INTERFLO 550 system was installed on the Vasterdals line in Sweden in 2012.

A modularised wayside system, INTERFLO 550 is specifically designed to provide the capacity, adaptability and cost-effectiveness needed for regional and rural routes, to meet any future growth in system size/capacity or levels of automation. The new system minimises trackside equipment by combining the ERTMS standard for onboard automatic train protection (ATP) with a radio-based wayside system. It addresses component cost and availability by employing readily available, commercial off-the-shelf products. Compared to fixed block systems, moving and flexible block gives more efficient traffic adaptability, thereby saving energy. Sharing data with other systems is also a simple task and can contribute to better traffic management.

High Speed Journey: A New Sense of Speed to Drive Global Growth

Congestion and pollution pose serious challenges to the growth of industrialised and developing nations. Rail presents a low carbon alternative to air and road as the backbone of national transportation infrastructure. Around the world, Bombardier Transportation moves hundreds of thousands of people quickly and efficiently to their destinations. The company's latest innovations in rail technology open a window to a future in which high speed is not just about travelling faster but also smarter from A to B.

High speed (HS) and very high speed (VHS) trains offer passengers an attractive alternative to motorways and medium distance air travel because of quick boarding and travelling comfort. In many countries, economic stimulus packages initiated in recent years support the construction of new rail networks. Modern high speed trains offer some of the most exciting and innovative technology found in transport, inspiring the imagination of passengers across the globe.

BOMBARDIER ZEFIRO high speed trains

Bombardier is creating a new sense of speed with its groundbreaking ZEFIRO family, featuring the world's most economical and eco-friendly VHS trains. These ultra-modern trains combine the highest capacity in the market with pioneering levels of passenger comfort. The flexible vehicles can be customised to any market needs and cover a top speed range between 250 km/h and 380 km/h. They are the culmination of Bombardier's global experience in the VHS sector, spanning more than two decades. Currently, there are four ZEFIRO trains in development - the ZEFIRO 250 and ZEFIRO 250NG (next generation) trains with top speeds of 250 km/h, the ZEFIRO380 train with a maximum speed of 380 km/h, and the V300ZEFIRO train for Europe.

As a world leading aerospace company, Bombardier has special expertise in aerodynamic design. It has applied these unique skills to the ZEFIRO family to achieve better overall train performance in terms of speed, safety and noise reduction. Advanced aerodynamic properties reduce wind drag ensuring better performance at very high speeds and lower energy consumption. This ultimately lowers operating costs. Examples include improved designs for the front end of the train and bogie skirts, reduced spacing between cars, and high speed pantographs specially designed to minimize aerodynamic resistance. ZEFIRO trains achieve true pan-continental interoperability because they are compatible with different power supply systems and different signalling and train control equipment. This enables cross-border travel beyond simple country-to-country trips.

The innovative ZEFIRO 380 and V300ZEFIRO trains are equipped with the proven BOMBARDIER FLEXX Speed bogie. It is designed to ensure excellent ride quality at very high speeds. The FLEXX Speed bogie family guarantees safe, stable and comfortable running throughout the entire speed range up to 380 km/h.

The V300ZEFIRO train - very high speed for Europe

The new European flagship of very high speed travel will be the Frecciarossa 1000 in Italy (the V300ZEFIRO model in Bombardier's product portfolio), premiering in Italy in 2014. The 50 trains will be delivered in consortium with Ansaldo Breda for Trenitalia, the leading Italian train operator, who placed the order some two years ago. The V300ZEFIRO train is capable of operating at top speeds of up to 360 km/h on Italy's high speed network.

The train's unusually high acceleration ensures excellent travel times even on winding routes. It is fully interoperable and will provide cross-border service, taking passengers to other European countries without the need to change trains. It could also be adapted for use on the European network, for example in France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. Currently under development, the train is an eight-car Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) that can run in single operation and multiple operation of two units and will have a total capacity of 485 + 2 (tip-up seats facing the space for passengers with reduced mobility) in four classes and a bistro.

BOMBARDIER TWINDEXX Swiss Express - a new level of speed and comfort

In many cities, Bombardier's double deck trains are a familiar sight. Offering high capacity in densely populated areas and fast speed on intercity rail links, double deck trains are central to an eco-friendly and comfortable rail transportation, moving millions of people every day.

Leading the way to a new level of fast and comfortable regional transportation are 59 new TWINDEXX Swiss Express trains for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). One of the technical highlights of the TWINDEXX train is the leading-edge BOMBARDIER FLEXXTronic WAKO system. It compensates the natural rolling motion of the carbody while driving, thus maximising comfort for passengers and at the same time allowing the train to take curves particularly quickly. Compared to other systems, the train will tilt only to a very limited degree and therefore causes no problems for people who feel unwell in "normal" tilting trains. This mechatronic technology, merging proven technical components into an innovative system, enables double deck intercity trains to increase speed in curves by up to 15 per cent, thus significantly reducing travel times. Visitors to Bombardier's InnoTrans stand can enjoy an exciting TWINDEXX multimedia experience to find out more about this next generation of high speed rail.

Passenger Comfort: Enabling the Modal Shift from Road to Rail

Passengers today expect convenient and flexible travel options - sustainable solutions that are accessible, comfortable and convenient. Innovations that continuously optimise vehicles to meet these expectations can encourage more people to demand a modal shift from the historic dependence on individual car use to fast and efficient modern public transit. Bombardier's leading technologies and design marry comfort with speed as never before. From long distance journeys to commuter travel, the next generation of Bombardier trains delivers a smooth and quiet ride with sleek, spacious interiors ideally suited for both work and play.

BOMBARDIER SPACIUM commuter train

For years, commuters have had to squeeze themselves into overcrowded and often outdated trains on their journeys to work. These trains transporting high volumes of passengers too often compromised on comfort and accessibility. Today, the new SPACIUM train offers operators and commuters an unprecedented transport solution. With its spacious and colourful design, this 21st century vehicle for large numbers of passengers defines a new standard of capacity and comfort for commuter application.

The secret of the train is its exceptional width of 3.06 m, offering an optimized capacity of five seats per row. The commuter train's legroom equals that of a regional train, while its 55 cm wide corridors allow passengers to move freely. It is highly flexible in operation, with a length from five to 12 cars. The wide doors combined with the step-free entrances and the large vestibules improve passengers' ease and speed of boarding and exiting.

The SPACIUM train's innovative design rests on the idea of a welcoming environment combining colours, lights and open space. The colourful design with its smooth curves creates an enjoyable and serene environment for daily commuter journeys. Windows make up half of the train's sides. The train includes new technologies such as LED lighting and the ThermoEfficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning system for reduced energy consumption, as well as a state-of-the-art information and entertainment system. Bombardier conceived this new modular product platform for SNCF commuter services in the Greater Paris Ile-de-France Region. The first “Francilien” train entered service in December 2009. The SPACIUM train is on display at InnoTrans 2012.

BOMBARDIER OMNEO Electric Multiple Unit

Another innovative rail vehicle from France is Bombardier's OMNEO train - the world's first articulated double-deck Electric Multiple Unit (EMU), with alternating single and double-deck cars. It offers both exceptional capacity and increased passenger comfort compared to conventional rail vehicles. Its extra-wide carbody of approximately 3 m is 20 cm wider than conventional double-deck EMUs. The train's modular concept makes it suitable for commuter, regional and intercity services, with maximum speeds of 160 km/h or 200 km/h. The lightweight vehicle construction combined with excellent weight distribution minimises axle load and creates flexibility for cross-border operation on all European networks.

The OMNEO train's single deck and double-deck cars have different functions. Single deck cars are dedicated to access and services with wide doors, large vestibules, and a large portfolio of interior equipment, e.g. toilets, bicycle areas. All technical equipment is mounted on the roof of the single deck cars to increase space inside the train for passengers. Double-deck cars are dedicated to capacity and comfort. There are no doors, toilets or traction equipment in the double-deck areas to increase acoustic and thermal comfort.

The train also offers improved accessibility thanks to wide doors (1.6 m), large vestibules (6 m2), wide gangways (2.3 m) and corridors (600 mm in 2+2 seat configuration), and step-free entrance for platforms between 550 mm and 920 mm in height. Bombardier designed this completely new vehicle in answer to the SNCF's tender for 860 double-deck EMUs for the French Regions; it is called "Regio 2N" in France.

BOMBARDIER FLEXITY trams and light rail vehicles (LRVs)

The proven FLEXITY family of trams and LRVs not only offers increased capacity and ecological technologies to improve urban flow and sustainable transport, it also introduces new levels of comfort to this successful mode of urban transportation. Wide double doors and maximised aisle width throughout the vehicles ensure fast passenger flow while extra large windows ensure passengers can enjoy the panoramic city scenery during the journey. Stop-request buttons are accessible from every seat and an optimised heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system guarantees thermal comfort throughout the year. A passenger infotainment system with highly visible large-screen displays completes the enjoyable ride experience with FLEXITY vehicles.

The portfolio's unique design concept - creative customisation based on standardised components - allows operators to choose a distinctive look that reflects the essential character of a city. The number of seats and aisle width can be adapted to suit each city's individual needs.

BOMBARDIER PRIMOVE e-mobility solution

Based on inductive power transfer, the emission-free PRIMOVE system transfers energy at very high levels of efficiency between components hidden underground and receiving equipment installed beneath the vehicle. This allows electric rail and road vehicles to be charged either in motion (dynamic charging) or while stationary (static charging) without affecting driving habits or journey times. Recharging is driver-friendly and hassle-free thanks to the intelligent vehicle detection function that makes the charging process fully automated. Minimal emissions and noise ensure quieter and more enjoyable journeys.

BOMBARDIER ZEFIRO family of high speed trains

The ZEFIRO is one of the world's fastest very high speed trains with a maximum operating speed of 380 km/h, and a sleeper version that reaches 250 km/h. It also offers unrivalled, customized comfort, smart design, and operational flexibility. It competes with air travel in terms of travelling times on distances of up to 700 km.

The trains' high-class aerodynamic performance is a key element in reducing excessive noise. This provides environmental advantages related to noise pollution controls and offers increased comfort for riders. Train cars and connection points are designed to reduce pressure differences when traveling in and out of tunnels at high speeds. The overall design of the trains is highly innovative as evidenced by the fact that the ZEFIRO 380 train has already received two prestigious design awards: the German iF Product Design Award as well as the 2011 Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. In addition, the train has also been nominated for the renowned 2013 German Design Award.

The TWINDEXX Vario double-deck train platform combines high capacity with exceptional flexibility for operators to configure trains according to their needs. It offers an ideal solution for high passenger volumes on regional and longer distance routes with short platforms. The train can be operated as an EMU or with a locomotive and its coaches are compatible with previous generation double-deck coaches. The BOMBARDIER MITRAC 1000 drive and control system allows the train to accelerate quickly to a constant speed. The train can reach a speed of 160 km/h and, optionally, up to 189 km/h. The train's modern, optimized front design improves side wind stability and reduces energy consumption.

TWINDEXX Vario trains provide low-floor and high-floor entrances with wide doors. In combination with sliding steps this allows easy access by reducing the gap in height between the vehicle and the platform. In addition to comfortable seats and spacious luggage racks, the new TWINDEXX Vario long-distance trains are, for the first time, equipped with cycle racks. A bright multi-purpose or family area enables children to be entertained. Provision for wireless Internet, mobile phone support and numerous electrical sockets for the convenient operation of electronic equipment are also included. TWINDEXX Vario trains are operating successfully in Germany, Denmark, Israel, Poland and Luxembourg.

BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 CBTC solution

Depending on the track layout and the train performance, the state-of-the-artCITYFLO 650 communications-based train control (CBTC) solution can achieve headways of less than 60 seconds. This results in increased capacity and shorter waiting times for passengers at stations. The CITYFLO 650 solution is suitable for new highly demanding urban lines and can be overlaid on existing lines without interrupting service, again benefiting passengers.

The solution reduces wear on the track and vehicles, and enables remote monitoring of all subsystems. The diagnostics data helps to identify failure trends (providing predictive maintenance features) and aids preventive maintenance to further improve operations. The automatic train operation system provides precision stopping at platforms and automatic door operation.
