FRANKFURT, Germany, September 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ - Johnson Controls, a global leader in automotive electronics and interiors, will be unveiling its innovative interior integration concept, Bespoke, at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. Bespoke showcases Johnson Controls' complete range of new technologies and interior products for premium crossover utility vehicles that can be tailored to specific customer needs.
The Bespoke interior is a tailored interior that combines everyday functionality with modern design and maximum comfort, demonstrating the ideal combination of individual interior components.
"Our new concept demonstrates how we are anticipating market needs and exceeding the expectations of our customers as it relates to individuality, ergonomics, safety and sustainability," said Han Hendriks, vice president, Advanced Product Development for Johnson Controls Automotive Electronics & Interiors.
Completely redesigned features and surfaces provide a totally different sense of space and ergonomics in the new interior concept. Tailored to the needs of the driver, the innovative and practical solutions create an interior characterized by comfort and ease of use. Based on the latest market research findings, the Bespoke concept illustrates how Johnson Controls supports automakers with its wide-ranging design expertise in customizing interiors as well as individually adapting global platforms to suit different vehicle segments and local markets.
"The key features of our Bespoke concept include user-friendly and advanced technologies in an environment that is suitable for all regions," said Hendriks. "This was created using a collaborative design process among our European, North American and Chinese studios."
According to Hendriks, the technologies unveiled could already be integrated in the next generation of vehicles. As a result, the company is also focusing on new interior design and production methods.
Premium materials and well-designed applications for extra comfort
The concept features a leather-covered floor console, instrument panel and door panels, made using new, weight-saving and cost-effective production technologies. A mechanism integrated into the front of the console enables individual space adjustment. Additional storage space for larger items is available in the floor console, under a soft "peel-to-reveal" leather-wrapped cover on both sides. The floor console structure also enables storage of consumer electronics devices, including tablets.
A key highlight is a removable and easy to clean waste bin around the floor console, which offers additional storage. Most importantly, it prevents smaller objects such as keys, coins or pens from falling beneath the seats.
In the door panel, the driver benefits from a combined armrest and storage option. The sliding armrest is not only comfortable, but also serves as a cover for another compartment where electronic devices such as cameras and smartphones can be stored. A USB port allows stored electronic devices to be charged. The door panels, produced using a special hybrid molding process (Compression Hybrid Molding), are approximately 40 percent lighter than comparable products.
The "zero gap" door panel improves cockpit aesthetics and craftsmanship, while increasing space for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) vent and switches or glove box size by eliminating the gap between doors and the instrument panel.
Intuitive interaction enabled by user-friendly features
The modern LED lighting and touchscreen displays are seamlessly integrated and facilitate intuitive interaction. The configurable main information display for the driver and the touchscreen above the floor console ensure a comfortable and safe user experience. There also is a wireless charging dock for mobile devices located in the floor console.
The Gen 3 Synergy Seat also is part of Bespoke. It considerably extends design possibilities as it features lower weight, reduced complexity, advancement in trim covers, electrically adjustable head restraints and an expressive design.
Johnson Controls will present its innovations from Sept. 12 - Sept. 22, 2013, at the IAA in Hall 5.1, Booth B28.
