The Alfred Fried Photography Award was initiated in 2013 by the Photographische Gesellschaft and Edition Lammerhuber and presented for the first time on 5 November 2013 in the rooms of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

The award is named after Alfred Hermann Fried, Austrian pacifist and author, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1911. It is awarded in his memory and spirit.

It is aimed at finding the world’s best photograph on the theme of peace and using it to remind us that peace is a top priority for felicitous coexistence. The award goes to the image that best signifies this theme in the relevant year.

The Alfred Fried Photography Award is open to entrants from anywhere in the world. Submission is free.

From 2014, the Photographische Gesellschaft (PHG) and Edition Lammerhuber offer the Alfred Fried Photography Award jointly with UNESCO, the Austrian Parliament, the Austrian Parliamentary Reporting Association and the Inernational Press Institute. The Austrian Parliament has agreed to host the jury meetings and the Award Gala for the foreseeable future.

The jury is made up of international experts (see below). Five entries will be nominated and will receive the Alfred Fried Medal. The jury then chooses one of these five works as the peace image of the year.

The Alfred Fried Photography Award is worth 5,000 euros. The peace image of the year will be shown at the Austrian parliament for a year.

In connection with the peace image of the year, a programmatic address on the theme of peace will be publicized. Last year, Peter-Matthias Gaede, Editor-in-Chief of GEO magazine, gave that address. In 2014, it will be delivered by Eric Falt, Assistant Director General of UNESCO. The plan for the future is to ask the recipient of that year’s Nobel Peace Prize to announce the peace image of the year and to give that address. The organizers are also keen to remember those journalists who lost their lives in the past year in the course of exercising their profession. A minute of silence during the Award Gala will be dedicated to them.

Each year, the Alfred Fried Photography Award and the peace image of the year will be announced in Vienna on 21 September, the UN International Peace Day.

This year the jury meeting and the Award Gala will be held on Monday, 15 September 2014.

The Alfred Fried Photography Award will take up an additional, sophisticated position of Austria on the theme of peace.

The dates below offer a window of opportunity to publicize the Alfred Fried Photography Award 2014 to 2021 across the world. The person of Alfred Hermann Fried himself, his role as peace activist and as the 1911 Nobel Peace Prize winner will be presented in connection with the following dates:
