- Press release by the Spokesman for Poland’s Minister-Special Services Coordinator:

On January 8, 2019, officers of Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) detained two men – a Polish citizen and a citizen of the People’s Republic of China – suspected of committing the crime of espionage. Upon a decision of the court, the two suspects – Piotr D. and Weijing W. – have been arrested for the period of three months.

After being detained, both men heard charges of committing a crime defined in Article 130 of the Criminal Code punishable with jail term of up to 10 years. The investigation into the matter is being conducted by the ABW and supervised by the Warsaw-based Branch Division of the National Public Prosecutor’s Office’s Department for the Organized Crime and Corruption for the province of Mazowieckie.

The arrested Polish national, Piotr D., is a former public officer whereas the Chinese national, Weijing W. in linked to a Chinese telecommunications company. The evidence gathered by the National Security Agency shows that both men carried out an espionage activity against Poland. As part of the ongoing investigation, the officers of the Agency have taken the following necessary investigative steps: searches in the suspects’ places of residence and evidence preservation.

The investigation is based on classified materials only, and given its course and nature for the time being no further information can be made available to the public.
