The Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (http://www.dena.de/) (dena) - the German Energy Agency - has awarded four companies with the Energy Efficiency Award 2013 at its Energy Efficiency Congress in Berlin. The first prize went to Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, who manufactures flat steel products, for their holistic business strategy for a systematic reduction of energy consumption. The second prize went to the IT consulting company erecon AG from Bremen for their systematic implementation of a variety of energy efficiency measures in their own data centre. The Hamburg-based Caféhaus LANGES e. K. was awarded the third prize for a consistent energetic optimisation of their production and coffee house operation. EJOT Fastening Systems Co. Ltd., an automotive supplier who is part of the German EJOT group in the Chinese province of Jiangsu, was awarded the recognition award by a panel of experts for their energy-efficient construction of a new production hall.

The prize, a total of € 30,000, is awarded by dena as part of its "Initiative EnergieEffizienz" ("Energy Efficiency Campaign") for innovative measures to increase energy efficiency in industry and commerce with the kind support of its premium partners DZ BANK AG, Imtech Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG and Siemens AG. The Federal Minister of Economics, Dr Philipp Rösler, is patron of the competition.

"The winners of the Energy Efficiency Award demonstrate that companies can reduce their energy costs and CO2 emissions significantly with innovative ideas. Businesses that focus on energy efficiency strengthen their competitive ability," said Stephan Kohler, Chief Executive of dena, at the award ceremony.

Since 2007, dena has been awarding the international Energy Efficiency Award for exemplary energy efficiency projects in industry and commerce as part of its "Initiative EnergieEffizienz" ("Energy Efficiency Campaign"). The "Initiative EnergieEffizienz" ("Energy Efficiency Campaign") is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology based on a decision by the German Parliament.
