The „Europe of the Carpathians” conference will again hold a special place in the program of the 31st edition of the Economic Forum in Karpacz. The event is initiated by Marek Kuchciński (the Vice-Chairman of the Law and Justice Parliamentary Club and the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland). Throughout its history, the subject area of the conference has been systematically expanding. This year one of the debate will be on contemporary political thought.

The following discussion panel guests are: Jarosław Kaczyński (Chairman of the Law and Justice, Poland), Ryszard Legutko (Philosopher and Member of the European Parliament). The discussion will be led by Zdzisław Krasnodębski (Member of the European Parliament).

The fundamental feature of Law and Justice vision of Polish foreign policy, which is Eurorealism, will be discussed. Contrary to Euroscepticism and Euroenthusiasm, Eurorealism assumes, above all, the primacy of the state as an entity in international relations. Interestingly, it is Euroenthusiasm and Euroskepticism that have become dogmatic positions, which is inappropriate from the Law and Justice point of view.

The ruling party views Poland's membership in NATO in a similar way. Not as an aim in itself, but as a necessary first step to maintain the security of the CEE region.

For Law and Justice, NATO is therefore the most important form of cooperation at both the political and military level and guarantees the stabilization of the continent.

At the same time, the key role of the United States is connected with a distrust towards Russia that is understandable from the perspective of recent events. After all, Poland's eastern neighbor has long been perceived as the main threat to regional security and the territorial integrity of Central and Eastern European countries.

The debate will be, above all, a platform for the exchange of ideas on values in contemporary European politics. The panellists will consider whether the politics "subordinated to values" is naivety or necessity in borderline situations, and will also talk about the relationship between real politics and the so-called "Machiavellianism", which assumes that "the aim justifies the means." How to reconcile faithfulness to values with effectiveness and where is the place of politician's ethics in life. These are just some of the questions that the participants of the panel will try to answer.

You’re welcome to participate in the discussion panel, which is part of the forthcoming 31st Economic Forum.

The event will take place on September 6-8, 2022 in Karpacz.
